Sundarbans produces the famous mangrove honey, or Sundarban honey as we know it. The process of Sundarban honey collection is unique. Mouals (or honey collectors) go deep into the Sundarbans to collect honey with a 14-day permit from the Bangladesh Forest Department. The Mouals stay inside the forest for these 14 days and collect honey. This honey is sold all over Bangladesh through various traders.

For 4 years, Shopan has been sending boats to collect honey in a joint venture and sells wholesale to reputed businesses across the country. 

Apart from collecting original Sundarban honey, Shopan also collects other honey such as lychee flower honey, mustard flower honey, black cumin honey, etc. The business is seeking funds for purchasing & storing such types of honey in bulk to cater to the increased market demand. 

Apart from the honey business, Shopan is also involved in various research projects and honey awareness work. Shopan is also encouraging traders to establish mini labs for quality honey screening and testing. Shopan has already helped to establish mini labs in 4 reputed institutions of the country. Apart from the establishment of the lab, training facilities will be launched very soon, insha-allah.

Shopan has been working tirelessly to develop the budding honey sector in the country and with this inspiration many educated youth are getting involved in the honey business today. As a result, Shopan has already gained recognition as one of the pioneers in the honey sector today.

Mr Ariful Islam passed his SSC and HSC from BAF Shaheen College and completed his honours in Journalism from Stamford University and MBM (Masters of Bank Management) from Bangladesh University of Business Technology. He ran a business of gents garments and also a pharmacy business. His work with honey started out as a hobby, and turned into a major business while studying and writing extensively about it! The pharmacy is still active, but the garment business has been closed and now the sole focus is on the honey business.

Mr. Arif has been working in the honey sector for 6 years, and has gathered a good reputation for themselves. He is working to raise awareness about adulterated honey as well as removing common misconceptions about honey. He is working tirelessly to make “Sundarbans honey” stand tall besides other famous brands of the world. Shopan Enterprise has worked with Alwan Enterprise over the past year for a separate BSTI standard for “Sundarbans honey”. Due to their efforts, this year BSTI released a new standard for honey; the gadget came into force as “BDS 1039-2022” from 28th September 2022 alhamdulillah.

The Contract

The investment is for a period of 12 months, from April 2024 to April 2025.

Projected Return on Investment (ROI): 17% 

Example: if someone invests BDT 100k in the project, he/she can expect to receive a total of BDT 117k by the end of April 2025.

biniyog.io will be charging investors a 10.53% fee on their profits. Example: If an investor invests BDT 100k and makes a profit of 119k in 12 months, biniyog.io will charge 2k as service fee. This means investors will be keeping 89.47% of profits generated. The net ROI for the investors will be 17% for 12 months after deducting biniyog.io’s fee.

  • Investors will go into a Murabahah agreement (sale contract) with Shopan Enterprise for purchasing different types of honey. 
  • It will be a “buy-and-sell” process where investors will first buy products through biniyog.io. Shopan Enterprise.
  • biniyog.io will act as an agent for the investors and appoint Shopan Enterprise to arrange the purchase of the required types of honey.
  • biniyog.io has proposed a price to Shopan Enterprise for the products after considering a minimum 19% profit on actual cost of product procurement. Shopan Enterprise has agreed to it. Investors will be getting a net of 17% ROI in 12 months after deducting biniyog’s fee on investor profit.
  • Investors can expect to get their returns over 12 months in 2 instalments:
    • 25% in February’25
    • 75% in April’25

Investors appoint biniyog.io as an agent to deal on their behalf (Wakalah) and invest into the business through buy and sale of assets under an advanced buy-and-sell (Bai’ Murabaha) agreement.

biniyog.io‘s Shariah advisors have approved the basis and application of this Bai’ Murabaha contract.

  • Price volatility & inflation: Price of commodities is going up on a regular basis. The honey market has been no exception. Honey market has become volatile recently mainly due to production shortage in this season.
    • Shopan Enterprise’s strategy: The business will be buying the products before the inception of the peak season. Being a wholesaler, Shopan Enterprise has a fixed set of customers. Moreover, the business has a good level of connections with many suppliers who can provide support to the business by keeping the honey supply at an optimum level.  
  • Disruption in honey collection from Sundarban: There have been incidents where honey collectors were brutally injured or got killed by tiger attacks. The honey collection comes to a halt if such incidents occur. The honey collectors fail to collect & provide the honey they have taken pre-payments for. Moreover, honey collectors often fail to collect the expected amount of honey due to weather issues, production shortage, etc.      
    • Shopan Enterprise’s strategy: The business is targeting to purchase different types of honey with fund to be raised from this campaign. Therefore, the business has the option to purchase other types of honey in case expected amount of Sundarban honey is not available for purchase. 

 biniyog.io will buy the products on behalf of investors first and secure ownership. Shopan Enterprise will act as collection agent for honey. The products will then be handed over to Shopan Enterprise within a very short time frame.

Shopan Enterprise would have the right to reject the products due to quality etc. The risk is expected to be minimal since Shopan Enterprise  themselves will be choosing the items before biniyog.io buys them.

This is a necessary risk to ensure Shariah compliance of the transaction.

biniyog.io has done in-house analyses of the projected returns of the business and they are expected to be able to repay on time, unless one of the risk factors come into play.

Shopan Enterprise  will share a security cheque with biniyog.io. Moreover, a guarantor will be introduced in the contract to add an extra layer of safety for the investors.
